Glossary - I ILS. See instrument landing system. Inertial navigation system (INS). Self-contained internal navigation system using sensors to measure changes in motion of aircraft, acceleration and deceleration, airspeed, altitude, and heading to maintain current position of aircraft. Also called “position keeping” because an interruption of the system requires the pilot to initialize or enter the beginning point of aircraft position reference. INS. See inertial navigation system. Instrument landing system. A ground-based precision instrument approach system usually consisting of a localizer, glideslope, outer marker, middle marker, and approach lights. |
