PERSONAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

PASSPORT: Required

VISA: Required. For persons arriving by private aircraft, visa issuance is dependent upon flight approval and landing clearance by ATC authorities in Yangon. For arrivals by nonscheduled commercial flights visas are issued without referral to Yangon. A minimum of 3 weeks, including time for clearance requests, should be allowed for issuance of landing clearance and a transit visa (visa valid for 24 hours) and tourist visas (visa valid for 28 days for purposes of tourism only). A minimum of 6 weeks should be allowed for the issuance of an entry visa (visa valid for up to 6 months and issued to persons on official business).

HEALTH & IMMUNIZATION: Yellow fever Vaccination Certificates are required for travelers arriving from an infected area and those proceeding to countries requiring a yellow fever vaccination certificate. The U.S. Public Health Service advises that malaria (including chloroquine resistant P. Falciparum) exists in all areas of the country below 1,000 meters (except Rangoon) from April through December.

OTHER: The following are required: 3 photographs and 2 completed visa forms (for transit visa); 7 photographs and 6 completed visa forms (for entry visa); visa for next country after MYANMAR (for transit visa); and letter from bank for financial capability (for entry visa).

AIRCRAFT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

1. All private and nonscheduled commercial aircraft overflying or landing for commercial or noncommercial purposes must obtain prior permission and confirmed clearance from the Director-General of Civil Aviation, 104 Strand Road, Rangoon, MYANMAR (TELEGRAPHIC ADDRESS: AIRCIVIL RANGOON/TELEX: 21228 CIVIL BM/AFTN: VBRRYA)) at least 3 weeks prior to departure. Request may be submitted either directly to the Director-General or through the American Embassy. (Requests through the Embassy require additional time.) All requests must include provision for prepaid reply.

2. All applications must include:

a. Type of aircraft and registration marks;

b. Route of flight including stops prior to and following the crossing of Burmese airspace;

c. Dates and times of arrival and departure from Burmese airspace and airports;

d. Purpose of flight; and

e. Type and amount of fuel required.

CORPORATE AIRCRAFT CONSTRAINTS

Nondomestic corporate flights within MYANMAR are not permitted without specific, high-level clearance from the Government of MYANMAR. Such clearance is rarely given. Normally, corporate flights are only permitted to land at Rangoon's Mingladon Airport, and the only when specific advance approval has been obtained.

SPECIAL NOTICES

1. The Myanmar Government is particularly strict in enforcing customs and currency control regulations.

2. Visitors entering MYANMAR should complete accurately and in detail the customs and currency declaration form they will receive upon arrival. There is no limit to the amount of foreign currency and travelers checks which can be brought into MYANMAR, but they must all be fully declared and any currency exchanged must be exchanged at an official exchange facility and noted on the back of the currency declaration form. No Myanmar currency (Kyats) may be brought into or taken out of MYANMAR. The penalty for violation of this law is a 6 months minimum prison sentence and/or a fine. FOREIGN EXCHANGE. For the convenience of the visitors, Foreign Exchange Certificates (FECs) are issued by the Central Bank of Myanmar to use during their stay. It is compulsory for a Foreign Independent Travellers (FIT) holding Entry Visa Tourist (EVT) to change on arrival a minimum of US $300 units. This is the minimum amount to be spent by a tourist during his/her stay. (All currency brought in must be exchanged and exchanged at the official rate only.)

3. Personal baggage is subject to a thorough search both on arrival and departure. All valuables such as cameras, radios, tape recorders, and jewelry must be declared on entry, and full duty must be paid on any item left in the country, for whatever reason (such as being lost or stolen). Departing tourists must have receipts for all items purchased in MYANMAR and the amounts of their purchases must tally with the amount of foreign currency exchanged for Kyats.

4. It is impossible to cash personal checks in MYANMAR. Credit Cards may be used at Government Hotels and certain government stores if the card is registered with customs on entry. Acceptable credit cards are American Express, Diners Club, Master, Visa and JCB.
