This chapter discusses the requirements for obtaining a pilot certificate, as well as discussing developing pilot skills and the qualities of a good flight instructor.

REQUIREMENTS

Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) part 61 specifies the requirements to earn a pilot certificate.

Eligibility

14 CFR part 61, section 83 establishes the requirements for a student pilot certificate.

To be eligible for a student pilot certificate, an applicant must:

"...(b) Be at least 14 years of age for the operation of a glider or balloon. (c) Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language. If the applicant is unable to meet one of these requirements due to medical reasons, then the Administrator may place such operating limitations on that applicant's pilot certificate as are necessary for the safe operation of the aircraft."

14 CFR part 61, section 61.103, establishes the requirements for a private pilot certificate.

To be eligible for a private pilot certificate, a person must:

"...(b) Be at least 16 years of age for a rating in a glider or balloon.

(c) Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language. If the applicant is unable to meet one of these requirements due to medical reasons, then the Administrator may place such operating limitations on that applicant's pilot certificate as are necessary for the safe operation of the aircraft...."

"...(e) Pass the required knowledge test on the aeronautical knowledge areas listed in section 61.105(b) of this part...."

"...(h) Pass a practical test on the areas of operations listed in section 61.107(b) of this part that apply to the aircraft rating sought.

(i) Comply with the appropriate sections of this part that apply to the aircraft category and class rating sought."

14 CFR part 61, section 61.123, establishes the requirements for a commercial pilot certificate. To be eligible for a commercial pilot certificate, a person must:

"(a) Be at least 18 years of age.

(b) Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language. If the applicant is unable to meet one of these requirements due to medical reasons, the Administrator may place such operating limitations on that applicant's pilot certificate as are necessary for the safe operation of the aircraft...."

"...(d) Pass the required knowledge test on the aeronautical knowledge areas listed in section 61.125 of this part;..."

"...(g) Pass the required practical test on the areas of operation listed in section 61.127(b) of this part that apply to the aircraft category and class rating sought;..."

"...(i) Comply with the sections of this part that apply to the aircraft category and class rating sought."

The FAA has specified the aeronautical knowledge and flight proficiency that must be demonstrated to earn a private and commercial certificate as listed below.
