United States Air Force To Begin Testing Navigation Aid

October 2, 1967 . Los. Angles USAF will begin developing in late spring a navigation aid, Doppler Inertial Loran (DIL) system. The system when available promises to improve aircraft navigation performance and accuracy. General Dynamics and McDonnell Douglas will work with the USAF to develop Doppler Inertial Loran. Ruff gestimates are DIL will be installed in the USAF tactical fighter bombers in early 1970's.

To use Loran, a navigator initializes a Loran-C receiver, obtains a position display in Time Differences (TDs) or latitude/longitude, and plots the position. Loran-C provides coverage for the continental U.S. and its coastal waters, the Great Lakes, and most of Alaska. Many other countries will also provide Loran (or Loran-like) services, or are in negotiations with their neighbors to expand.
