Curtiss Wins The Gordon Bennett Cup By 5.8 Seconds
Rheims, France, August 29, 1909, Competing against Europe's top aviators, American pilot, Glenn Curtiss wins the Gordon Bennett Cup speed race, averaging 46 mph in the presents of over 150,000 spectators. Contestants included pilots from the United States, Britain and France. Curtiss piloted his Reim Racer pusher biplane. Curtiss completed the 6.2 mile race in 15 minutes and 50.4 seconds. |
