DC-3 Encounters Severe Turbulence And Looses A Wing 

November 4, 1944, a Trans Continental & Western Airways DC-3 enroute to Hardford, California encountered severe turbulence and thunder storms. The pilot tried in vain to maneuver the aircraft in safer airspace.

However, due to excessive forces on the wings, one of the wings separated from the aircraft causing it to crash killing all 24 on board.
