US Coast Guard Loran Station Up And Running
January 8, 1958- The Coast Guard LORAN Station at Johnston Island began transmitting on a 24-hour basis, thus establishing a new LORAN rate in the Central Pacific. The new rate between Johnston Island and French Frigate Shoal gave a higher order of accuracy for fix wing aircraft and boat positions from Oahu, Hawaii, to Midway Island. LORAN an electronic navigational system by which hyperbolic lines of position are determined by measuring the difference in the time of reception of synchronized pulse signals from two fixed transmitters. LORAN A operates in the 1750-1950 khz frequency band and LORAN C and D operate in the 100-110 khz frequency band. |
