Lufthansa Becomes Largest A340 Airline Customer

December 19, 1996 Lufthansa has signed a contract with Airbus Industries for one additional A340, bringing to 18 its total order for the ultra-long range airliner and making it the largest airline customer for this type. The A340-300, which is to be delivered during the first half of 1998, will be configured to seat 260 passengers in a three-class layout. The aircraft will be powered by CFM International CFM56-5C4 engines.

Lufthansa, which was an A340 launch customer and the first to take delivery of four-engine aircraft in February 1993, is currently operating the largest A340 fleet -- which includes six A340-200s and nine A340-300s. With a total of 135 Airbus Industries aircraft ordered, Lufthansa also is the largest single airline customer of the European consortium. In addition to unmatched performance and range, the A340 offers the quietest cabin in the sky. It also is one of the most environmentally friendly airliners ever delivered to operators, with very low emissions and fuel consumption. Lufthansa advertises the A340 as burning only 3.7 liters per 100 km. per passenger. As a launch customer for the A340, the German airline provided a significant amount of valuable input for every design phase of the aircraft.
