Brazilian Immigrant Achieves Europe’s First Flight And Wins Frances Archdeacon Prize Paris, France, October 23, 1906, Alberto Santos Dumont, a Brazilian immigrant successfully sustained flight in his Bis 14, powered by a 24 horse powered Antoinette engine. The Bis 14 traveled for a distance of 197 feet and gained an altitude of 10 feet. For his accomplishments, Dumont received the Archeacon prize a prize only given to an individual (s) who could achieve flight for more than a distance of 25 meters. |
