The Wright Bothers Make Third Glider Test Flight

August 1902 Between September 1901 and August 1902, the Wrights developed and tested more than 50 airfoil sections in a home-made wind tunnel and on a modified bicycle.

At last they had accurate data for building a third glider which was test-flown at Kitty Hawk in the fall of 1902. Having a 32-ft. span, it made nearly a thousand gliding flights. The Wrights learned from it that to obtain adequate control in the air, they would have to install a movable rudder in place of fixed rudders.
