A Light Twin Violates White House Airspace

January 15, 1999, the United States Secret Services shot off red flares from the roof of the White House, in an effort to warn a pilot in a light twin engine aircraft he was getting to close to the White House. The aircraft was having difficulty maintaining his given course by ATC due to heavy winds. The twin engine took off from Reagan National Airport about 4:45 pm and tracked a course over the Mall skirting the restricted airspace. Because of high winds the aircraft was blown off course an into White House Airspace. The Secret Service took appropriate measures since the President was about to land on the White House lawn by helicopter. The twin engine aircraft was able to take measures to correct his flight path.
