The Wichita State College Football Team Killed In an Aircraft Crash

October 2, 1970, A Golden Eagle Martin 404 aircraft that the Wichita State College Football Team was flying crashed into mountainous terrain while on a flight from Denver to Fort Collins, CO. Apparently the aircraft was over weight and unable to climb over the mountain tops.

Following a refueling stop at Denver, Colorado, the flight proceeded via a "scenic" route up Clear Creek Valley, toward Loveland Pass (elevation 11,990 feet mean sea level) and the Loveland ski resort area. The mountains on either side of the  ranged from 12,477 feet to 13,234 feet. At approximately 1300 feet the aircraft crashed into the base of Mount Trelease, 8 miles west of Silver Plume, Colorado. The elevation of the crash site is 10,750 feet. Of the 40 passengers 8 survived.
