NBAA Applause Support By Congress For General Aviation

By Mike Mitchell

January 29, 2010 - The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) applauded the continuing momentum enjoyed by Congressional House and Senate General Aviation (GA) Caucuses, as demonstrated by recent developments among both groups. In recent months, lawmakers have formed the caucuses in support of all general aviation, including business aviation.

The Senate GA Caucus formally launched in a Capitol Hill meeting attended by representatives from NBAA and other general aviation groups and hosted by Sens. Mark Begich (D-AK) and Mike Johanns (R-NE), who serve as the caucus chairs. On the other side of Capitol Hill, the House GA Caucus, formed in April 2009 and chaired by Reps. Vernon J. Ehlers (R-3-MI) and Allen Boyd (D-2-FL), added its 100th member this week.

“The continued growth of these caucuses underscores the recognition by Congress that general aviation creates jobs, provides a transportation lifeline to communities across the country, helps businesses succeed and supports people and communities in times of crisis,” said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. “We are delighted to work with House and Senate Caucus Members to highlight the essential role that general aviation, including business aviation, plays in every state and Congressional District.”

The formation of both caucuses comes as NBAA and the General Aviation Manufacturers Association continue to advocate for the business aviation community through the No Plane No Gain initiative, which underscores the essential role of business aviation in America today.

Business aviation contributes $150 billion to U.S. economic output, and employs more than 1.2 million people. The vast majority of general aviation aircraft used for business worldwide are manufactured, operated, serviced and maintained in the United States. Even the minority of those planes manufactured outside the U.S. are often “completed,” adding avionics, electronics, automation systems, engines, paint, interiors and other aircraft components manufactured here in the U.S.

Business aircraft manufacture is one of the remaining sources of good manufacturing jobs in this country – the kind of jobs we can keep in the U.S. in the 21st century. It is also one of the few industries still contributing to the nation’s positive balance of trade. The flights made by business airplanes require support. Schedulers, dispatchers, maintenance technicians, pilots, training professionals and airport employees are just a few of the many support professions involved in business aviation.

National Business Aviation Association or NBAA, is a non-profit and nonpartisan corporation based in Washington, DC. The Association has existed for over 55 years and as of this writing, represents more than 8,000 companies. Founded in 1947 and based in Washington, DC, NBAA is an industry organization representing companies that rely on general aviation aircraft. The Association provides more than 100 products and services to the business aviation community, including the NBAA Annual Meeting & Convention, the world's largest civil aviation trade show. NBAA aims to create an environment that fosters business aviation in the United States and around the world. NBAA is currently headed by Ed Bolen, who became President and CEO in 2004.
