IAA had reported it could not pay the air traffic controllers a pay increase or pay into their pension fund because the IAA could not afford it. January 19th The Irish Aviation Authority, (IAA) was formally notified by the air traffic controllers union, IMPACT that a work stoppage would begin on this day. The stoppage involved workers not working between the hours of 14.00 and 18.00 in Dublin, Cork and Shannon Airports and which would disrupt services at all airports. The Irish Aviation Authority in turn suspended 14 air traffic controllers. IMPACT called for the strike due to an increase in work load, failure to pay into employee pension funds and not paying agreed contract wage increases.

Col. Johnny Johnson, the 437th AW stage manager and 15th Airlift Squadron assistant director of operations. Normally the base command post staff would track alert status, crew rest, maximum flying hours per week restrictions and other information, but with the addition of 30 additional aircrews to the flying operation, the stage was imperative to the mission, Colonel Johnson said.

Two Rounds Of Pilot Layoffs At American Airlines

American Airlines has reported today that up to 175 pilots will be laid off. On Friday American sent out notices to 80 pilots informing them that they will lose their jobs at the end of February and the remainder sometime in middle spring 2010. Officials said there could be a second round of furloughs in the spring. The carrier further stated the impact of the economy and reduction in capacity over the last 18 months, coupled with lower than expected pilot attrition, and has resulted in a pilot surplus. This was a painful but necessary decision, as this staffing adjustment will better align the size of our pilot organization with the size of our current operation.

Air France Overweight Passenger Policy Still Unclear

If the passenger did not pay for the extra seat he or she would then be prevented from boarding for 'safety reasons'. Opposed to the information disclosed in the press, Air France has denied this claim and has stated “Air France has no intention of making heavier passengers pay for a second seat”. However, Air France plans to make one single change to its service starting February 1st, which is to refund heavier passengers the cost of the second seat in its economy section if a passenger has purchased a second seat as long as the Economy cabin is not fully booked.

Airdrop is one of many options the international community is using in order to create alternate distribution points that will enable aid to reach the people more quickly. Airmen from U.S. Southern Command's air component, Air Force South, conducted an airdrop mission on Monday in an effort to provide an alternate distribution point for relief supplies to Haitian earthquake victims. The mission was planned and executed by Airmen at Headquarters Air Mobility Command, 18th Air Force and the 618th Tanker Airlift Control Center.

British Airways Prepares For Holiday Labor Strike

British Airways is commencing legal action in an attempt to protect customers from the massive stress and disruption threatened by Unite's decision to call a 12-day strike from December 22. The airline has today written to Unite, highlighting irregularities in the union's strike ballot, which the airline believes renders the ballot invalid. The airline called on Unite to call off the industrial action by 2pm today. The union has not done so and British Airways is now seeking an injunction to prevent the strike going ahead. Today's letter was the third sent to Unite, pointing out the balloting flaws, since last Friday. The union did not reply to the first two letters. As a back-up to the legal action, British Airways managers have been establishing which cabin crew might wish to work normally during the strike period.

The Columbus facility will close at the end of the transition process. Cessna will also accelerate its plans to move sub-assembly work from its Wichita facilities to facilities in Mexico. To adjust to these business realities, Cessna has placed a strong focus on reducing costs, managing inventory and aligning their manufacturing facilities to meet their lower schedule projections. Cessna has already taken several steps to reduce their capacity including closing facilities in Bend, OR and Toledo, OH and consolidating facilities in Columbus, GA and in Wichita. Although these moves have been significant, additional changes are still necessary to properly align their manufacturing capacity and reduce their costs.

VICTORIA, BC, CANADA Carmanah Technologies Corporation has received an order valued at approximately USD $365,000 to supply solar powered elevated runway guard lights (ERGLs) to an air force base in the Middle East. The Carmanah ERGLs will provide 24-hour unidirectional flashing to aid in reducing airfield incursions at runway and taxiway intersections, improving safety and increasing operational capability at the base. As a portable or permanent stand-alone solution, the ERGL installs in minutes with no trenching, cabling, or external power required. Rugged construction delivers reliable performance in the harshest environments while withstanding extreme temperatures, rain, snow, ice, standing water, and wind velocities up to 300 mph (482 km/h). Recently tested by the FAA at Dupage Airport, Illinois and Provo Airport, Utah, the Carmanah solar LED ERGL is designed to satisfy the structural and environmental requirements of FAA Advisory Circular 150– 5345 – 46B (L-804) and ICAO Annex 14 using solar power.
