Test of the
message from Frank Del Gandio - FAA:
Antonio,
I received your message with the safety recommendations. The use of on board
cameras has been explored about 10 years ago. The problem is the initial cost
and the massive costs associated with the required maintenance. The deployable
recorder was also a viable thought 20 years ago. In fact the FAA purposely
crashed a B720 in 1984. There were numerous tests being conducted including a
deployable
flight data recorder. It was located in the left horizontal
stabilizer. It deployed on impact as designed. I actually saw it work because I
was in charge of the investigation. Here again the FAA was up against the
financial aspects which did not justify the need. I thank you for your concern
for air safety.
