Gulfstream Crashes At Bedford Field Killing All Onboard

June 1, 2014 – On Saturday seven people killed in a plane crash at Bedford Hanscom Field in Bedford, Massachusetts. At or about 9:40 PM a Gulfstream IV, N121JM was departing the airport for Atlantic City International Airport, New Jersey on runway 11 when the jet ran off the runway, crashed and burst into flames.

Upon impact the private plane exploded, rattled nearby homes and sent a large fireball and a plume of black smoke into the air. Officials report all seven aboard the Gulfstream were killed in the crash.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene within moments of the crash and extinguished the fire, the aircraft was destroyed. The airport has been closed for an indefinite period of time. The aircraft was operated by SK Travel LLC. Onboard was a crew of 3 and 4 passengers.

Early reports indicate the Gulfstream IV was cleared to takeoff on runway 11 (runway is 7011 feet long). The jet accelerated normally to takeoff speed, the pilot attempted to raise the nose and take off however, the pilot aborted the takeoff.

The pilot deployed thrust reversers and applied brakes. Because the pilot had used up a good portion of the runway he was unable to stop the pane in time and continued on until the aircraft crashed into a water filled gulley, which was 2,000 feet past the runway end at which time the aircraft erupted in a post crash fire destroying the aircraft and killing all onboard.

The pilot has been identified as James McDowell, 51, of Georgetown, Delaware and the copilot Bauke DeVries, 45, of Marlton, New Jersey. One off the passengers has also been identified as Lewis Katz, 72, co-owner of The Philadelphia Inquirer. It has been reported that Katz had flown in yesterday to attend a fund raiser at the Concord home of historian and author Doris Kearns Goodwin and her husband.
