July 6, 2010 - Over the July 4th weekend, a single engine Cessna Corvalis 400, tail number N660BA, was stolen from Monroe County Airport (KBMG) Bloomington, Indiana and crash landed off the coast of the Bahamas. U.S. authorities believe the pilot of the aircraft was the infamous Colton Harris-Moore of Camano Island, Washington.

Although Colton Harris-Moore does not have a pilot?s license he has stolen several aircraft and crash landed them in the past. It is believed that the only flight training Colton Harris-Moore received was from a flight manual he ordered online and using a personal computer based flight simulator.

The Cessna 400 was derived from the normally-aspirated Columbia 300 which was itself derived from the Lancair ES kit aircraft. The 400 is powered by a turbocharged Continental TSIO-550-C engine producing 310 horsepower with a max cruise speed of 270 mph and with a range of 1280 nautical miles. The aircraft is equipped with a Garmin G1000 glass cockpit. It is truly amazing that this brazing individual was able to fly across country and over the water with what little aviation skills he has.

It is very unlikely that this individual flew cross country without raising any alarms with air traffic control. However authorities feel it has the markings of the Barefoot Burglar. Investigators believe the single engine aircraft worth over $600,000 was stolen between 9:30 PM Saturday and 6:30 AM Sunday. The aircraft is registered to BS LLC, in Jennings, Indiana. The FBI on Tuesday has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Colton Harris-Moore.

The Bahamas Flight Services reported the aircraft crash landed in the water just off the shoreline of the Bahamas and that there is neither a trace of the pilot nor any passengers. The US Coast Guard picked up signals from the aircraft's Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) which alerted the Bahamian authorities.

Colton Harris-Moore, born March 22, 1991, 18 years of age, 6?5?, 210 pounds, better known as Colt, grew up in a mobile home in an isolated area of Camano Island, located in the state of Washington. At age two his biological father left the home and at age 7 his stepfather died. It was reported the stepfather was physically and emotional abusive and on one occasion his stepfather choked him during an argument at a family barbecue. This young man had great difficulties in the public school setting, he would not listen to his teachers and was involved in numerous altercations at school.

In 2007, Colton was convicted and sentenced to 3 years in a juvenile detention center. However, Colton was later transferred to a halfway house because of good behavior. In 2008, while serving time in the halfway home, Colton Harris-Moore escaped out of a second story window. At bed-check he was in his pajamas. While counselors left to do further rounds in the building, Colton climbed out a second story window.  He has been on the run ever since and thus began his infamous run from the law.
