Three al-Qaida supporters were found guilty in Woolwich Crown
Court in
Ibrahim Savant,
Arafat Waheed Khan and Waheed Zaman were convicted by a jury of
conspiring to blow up jets with homemade liquid bombs. The plot involved
smuggling liquid bombs in drinking bottles onto commercial aircraft that
was bound for the

If these men were
successful, the explosions could have exceeded the carnage of the
September 11th (9/11) attacks. The discovery of this plot led to strict
rules in passengers being able to carry liquids onboard commercial
flights around the world. These flights included
The courthouse in
which the men were tried is one of twelve Crown Courts serving Greater
London. It stands adjacent to both HM Prison Belmarsh and Belmarsh
Magistrate's Court. The court has 7 courtrooms and deals with more than
750 cases a year. Woolwich Crown Court has been designed as a high
security courtroom and is the preferred venue for such trials.
The jury rejected
the defense clam that the plot was an elaborate publicity stunt. Sue
Hemming, head of the CPS counterterrorism division, said ?the
convictions were the culmination of years of work by police, the
security services and prosecutors?.
To date a total of
12 terrorist have been convicted in the liquid bomb plot, including
Abdulla Ahmed Ali, the mastermind who was sentenced last September to a
minimum of 40 years in jail. |
