London Three Men Found Guilty Of Trying To Blow Up Transatlantic Jets

July 10, 2010 - Three al-Qaida supporters were found guilty in Woolwich Crown Court in London on Thursday of conspiring to blow up seven transatlantic jets bound for the U.S. and other countries in 2006.

Ibrahim Savant, Arafat Waheed Khan and Waheed Zaman were convicted by a jury of conspiring to blow up jets with homemade liquid bombs. The plot involved smuggling liquid bombs in drinking bottles onto commercial aircraft that was bound for the US and Canada.

The plan was to smuggle liquid explosives onto the commercial jets. The bomb device was made up of hydrogen peroxide, batteries and light bulb filament in which the suicide bombers would have assembled and detonated in mid-air causing untold damage.

If these men were successful, the explosions could have exceeded the carnage of the September 11th (9/11) attacks. The discovery of this plot led to strict rules in passengers being able to carry liquids onboard commercial flights around the world. These flights included San Francisco, Toronto, Montreal, Washington, New York and Chicago.

The courthouse in which the men were tried is one of twelve Crown Courts serving Greater London. It stands adjacent to both HM Prison Belmarsh and Belmarsh Magistrate's Court. The court has 7 courtrooms and deals with more than 750 cases a year. Woolwich Crown Court has been designed as a high security courtroom and is the preferred venue for such trials.

The jury rejected the defense clam that the plot was an elaborate publicity stunt. Sue Hemming, head of the CPS counterterrorism division, said ?the convictions were the culmination of years of work by police, the security services and prosecutors?.

To date a total of 12 terrorist have been convicted in the liquid bomb plot, including Abdulla Ahmed Ali, the mastermind who was sentenced last September to a minimum of 40 years in jail.
