May 28, 2010 —
Times Square visitors got a first-look at the Red Bull Air Race
World Championship coming to Liberty
State Park in Jersey City next month. It’s been a hundred
years since the first aviation exhibit happened in
Los Angeles and
Belmont Park,
New York in 1910 and onlookers had
the chance to experience an interactive “channel through time” exhibit,
meet the real heroes – the Red Bull Air Race Pilots – and hear the
excitement from the people who brought the race to their cities.
“New
York City
is known around the globe for providing New Yorkers and visitors alike
with the world’s top attractions and entertainment,” said Evan Korn,
Executive Director at the Office of Citywide Event Coordination and
Management. “It’s only fitting that the world-class Red Bull Air Race
would grace our distinguished island.”

In the Red Bull
Air Race, fifteen of the world’s best pilots race individually against
the clock for the fastest time through an aerial race track made up of
inflatable air gates. In 2009, the Red Bull Air Race was broadcast in
over 87 countries reaching over 300 million viewers. The two-day
spectator experience, coupled with the global television broadcast, will
showcase New York and New Jersey as premier sporting destinations.
The race in New York and
Liberty
State Park also represents an exciting
opportunity to stimulate the local economy and share with the world the
historical importance of
Liberty
State Park.
“Red Bull Air Race
has brought over 10 million dollars of economic impact in other host
cities,” said Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy, representing
Jersey City, New Jersey. “We look forward to a similar
economic impact in the metro area.”
Over the past five
years, the Red Bull Air Race has held races in major metropolitans such
as London, Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona,
and in the U.S. in San Diego, Detroit, San Francisco, and
Monument Valley, Utah.
Each pilot operates a year-round race team including a technician and
team coordinator. The end goal for each race team is to accumulate as
many points throughout the season in a quest to achieve the prestigious
honor of 2010 Red Bull Air Race World Champion. The
New York race will be the fifth of eight races
this season.
