NetJets Supports Art Basel Miami Beach

By Daniel Baxter

November 22, 2010 - NetJets the global leader in private aviation, announced that the company will continue its longstanding support of Art Basel Miami Beach, North America’s premier modern and contemporary art show.

NetJets has proudly partnered with the international fair since 2002. Art Basel Miami Beach will run from December 2-5, 2010 at the Miami Beach Convention Center and will feature more than 2,000 leading artists exhibited by 250 top galleries from across the globe.

Art Basel is an international contemporary art exhibition held each year in Basel, Switzerland, and in Miami, Florida, USA, as Art Basel Miami Beach. Like the Venice Biennale, it has been called "the Olympics of the art world". The first Art Basel was held in 1970.

In 2007, Annette Schönholzer, Marc Spiegler, and Cay Sophie Rabinowitz took over for the director of the show, Sam Keller. Rabinowitz became artistic director, Schonholzer was in charge of organization and finances, and Spiegler was responsible for strategy and development. At the end of April 2008 the resignation of Cay Sophie Rabinowitz was announced. She was the artistic director for both fairs. The fair has given each of Rabinowitz's former co-directors, Annette Schönholzer (formerly director of operations and finance) and Marc Spiegler (formerly director of strategy and development), the title of co-director, Art Basel and Art Basel Miami Beach.

Art Basel Miami Beach is an annual contemporary art art exhibition held in Miami, Florida, and is a sister event to Art Basel in Switzerland. Art Basel Miami Beach has been held annually since 2002, has been held throughout the city each December. Along with adjoining fairs and associated events, Art Basel Miami Beach has eclipsed the original Art Basel in size, popularity, if not importance.

Events for Art Basel Miami Beach are held in art galleries in the Miami neighborhoods of Wynwood and the Miami Design District. Events in Downtown Miami are held in coordination with the Miami Art Museum and Downtown area associations at Bicentennial Park and Bayfront Park, as well as Downtown theatres such as the Gusman Theater.

Larger exhibits at Art Basel are held in the Miami neighborhood of South Beach with free, public exhibits held along the beach and in various parks around South Beach. More private events are held at the Miami Beach Convention Center with expositions of artists from around the world.

The Lincoln Theatre, Colony Theatre, and local bookstores are also host to many Art Basel movie showings, and expositions. Most art galleries and studios in the area host public events in correlation for Art Basel that showcase local Miami artists work. Many local galleries and artists also have special events and exhibitions before and after the official Art Basel dates, to take advantage of the increased media and patrons. This has increased the importance, popularity, and size of Art Basel Miami Beach to the international art community.

“Art Basel Miami Beach has become one of the most important annual art shows in the world, and NetJets is proud to support this prestigious event,” said NetJets North America President of Sales, Marketing & Service Adam Johnson. “Through our partnership with Art Basel Miami Beach, we are not only able to provide NetJets Owners with access to this celebrated art show, but we are also able to bring together two complementary brands – the best in modern and contemporary art, and the best in private aviation.”

For the last eight years, NetJets celebrated the opening of Art Basel by honoring an acclaimed artist or art collector at a private cocktail reception for NetJets Owners and guests. This year, NetJets continues its tradition of honoring the world’s most influential artists, partnering with Lehmann Maupin Gallery to host the NetJets Collectors Cocktail, in honor of legendary artist Tony Oursler.

This invitation-only event will be held at the Delano, located in the heart of Miami Beach, and features a site-specific outdoor installation, created specifically for the Delano space by Mr. Oursler. Following the event, the installation will be accessible to the public from 10:30 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 30.

"We are thrilled to be collaborating with NetJets on their annual Collectors Cocktail. It’s an exciting moment for us to be able to honor Tony Oursler and present this outdoor installation at the Delano during one of the most important weeks in the art world," said Lehmann Maupin partners, Rachel Lehmann and David Maupin.

In past years, NetJets has honored such artists as Richard Prince, Alex Katz and Jaume Plensa, and art collectors Leonard Lauder and Donald Marron. NetJets boasts a long-standing commitment to the arts and its most important institutions. NetJets is also a supporter of Art Basel in Switzerland, the sister event of Art Basel Miami Beach, and recently sponsored the opening of the Lynda and Stewart Resnick Exhibition Pavilion at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and The Aspen Art Museum’s artCRUSH.

NetJets has also partnered with the Whitney Museum of American Art, SFMoMa, the Guggenheim Museum, the New Museum in New York, the Walker Art Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, the Miami Art Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the SITE Santa Fe
