May 11, 2010 - Northwest flight attendants, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) today applauded the National Mediation Board's (NMB) announcement on new democratic voting procedures. The long awaited decision, which was published in the Federal Register, abolishes outdated methods of voting that were highly susceptible to management coercion.
Under the new
guidelines, the majority of workers who actually vote in union elections
will decide the election and the NMB will stop assigning "no" votes to
workers who do not participate in the process. "Democracy won today and the over 7,000 Northwest AFA-CWA members look forward to voting in an election where there will be a level playing field," said Janette Rook, AFA-CWA Northwest President. |

"Northwest flight
attendants have had union representation and a legally binding contract
for over 60 years and we have worked tirelessly to maintain those
rights. Since the recent
merger with Delta, Northwest flight attendants have been concerned our
rights would be taken away. However, today democracy has prevailed and
every vote will be counted."
The guidelines
must remain in the Federal Register for 30 days before the new ballot
procedure can take effect. Once the new voting guidelines are in place,
AFA-CWA will file a petition seeking the NMB's determination that
Northwest and Delta are a single transportation system for purposes of
flight attendant representation. Once that finding is made, the NMB will
schedule an election.
For over 60 years, the Association of Flight Attendants has been
serving as the voice for flight attendants in the workplace, in the
aviation industry, in the media and on Capitol Hill.
More than 50,000 flight attendants at 21 airlines come
together to form AFA-CWA, the world's largest flight attendant
union. AFA is part of the 700,000-member strong Communications
Workers of America (CWA), AFL-CIO.
