UPS Makes Gains In Minority Hiring Practices

September 14, 2010 - United Parcel Service (UPS) again has been named to Hispanic Business magazine's Diversity Elite 60, a list of the nation's top companies that promote and model diversity in the workplace.

According to the September issue of the magazine, more than 32 variables were used to measure companies' commitment to Hispanic hiring, promotion, marketing, philanthropy and supplier diversity.

To compile the list, the magazine surveyed and evaluated the top Fortune 1000 companies, American subsidiaries of Global 500 companies and large U.S. public and private companies.

Those listed met or exceeded the following criteria of diversity measures in the workplace. Board of Directors and leadership, recruitment, retention and promotion, marketing and community outreach and supplier diversity.

In 1999, Lieff Cabraser and several co-counsel represented a class of approximately 14,000 African-American part-time hourly employees of UPS's Pacific and Northwest Regions alleged race discrimination in promotions and job advancement. A federal court approved a $12.14 million settlement in this action.

In 2005, six African-American and Hispanic United Parcel Service workers based at the company's Uniondale mail sorting and delivery facility filed suit in the Supreme Court of the State of New York in Nassau County alleging civil and human rights violations. The suit charged that minority workers were reprimanded without reason or for inconsequential infractions while white employees who commit more serious violations of company policy are not disciplined.

"UPS has a long-standing commitment to diversity. We know that our employees and suppliers are absolutely essential to the success of our business. Their unique ideas and talents help strengthen us as an employer, a business and a corporate citizen. And because of that, we can better serve the needs of our customers and be a reflection of the communities we serve" said Amy Whitley, vice president of corporate human resources.

Recently, UPS also was recognized with a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Corporate Award and was among companies listed in Black Enterprise magazine's 40 Best Companies for Diversity; National Veteran-Owned Business Association's 10 Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses, and WBENC's America's Top Corporations for Women Business Enterprises.

United Parcel Service, Inc. commonly referred to as UPS, is a package delivery company. Headquartered in Sandy Springs, Georgia, United States, UPS delivers more than 15 million packages a day to 6.1 million customers in more than 215 countries and territories around the world.

UPS is well known for its brown trucks, internally known as package cars (hence the company nickname "The Big Brown Machine"). UPS also operates its own airline (IATA: 5X, ICAO: UPS, Callsign: UPS) based in Louisville, Kentucky where its Worldport air hub is also located.

UPS major domestic competitors include United States Postal Service (USPS) and FedEx. In addition to these domestic carriers, UPS competes with a variety of international operators, including Canada Post, FCML COURIERS, TNT N.V., Deutsche Post (owner of DHL), Royal Mail, LDH EXPRESS, Japan Post, India Post and many other regional carriers, national postal services and air cargo handlers.
