Romney Cancels Campaign Rally After Plane Crash At Pueblo Memorial Airport

By Mike Mitchell

September 17, 2012 - On Sunday Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney cancelled a campaign rally that was to be held at 4:30 PM at the Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum which is located on Pueblo Memorial Airport, Colorado. A Romney spokesperson reported the cancelation was due to a plane cash that occurred at the airport at 8:20 AM.

At about 8:20 AM on Sunday a small home built experimental aircraft a KR2S crashed while attempting to land at the airport killing the pilot who has been identified as George McHenry, 68, of Pueblo and sole occupant onboard. Two of the three runways were closed (8L/-26R 10,498 Feet and 17-35 8,308 feet) leaving only one runway open, 8R/26L 3,667 feet.

The Rand Robinson KR-1 is a single-seat, single-engine sport aircraft designed in the United States in the early 1970s and marketed for homebuilding. A two-seat version is marketed as the KR-2. It is a low-wing cantilever monoplane of conventional design with an enclosed cockpit and tailwheel undercarriage.

Just after 10 AM campaign officials announced the event was canceled "due to the incident at the airport." Rick Gorka a Romney spokesperson said "We do not want to interfere with the investigation of any emergency response efforts”.

Mark Lovin, airport director reported that the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 that Romney was to fly in would not be able to land on the only runway open which is 3,667 feet long. A minimum runway length needed for landing for a MD-80 is 5,000 feet.

By noon time airport officials reported all runways would be opened at the airport at about 2:30 PM. At 2:30 PM Mountain Standard Time all runways to the airport were reopened for use. The Romney campaign has not announced whether the event would be rescheduled.

A new poll shows President Barack Obama with a five point lead over GOP challenger Mitt Romney in Colorado. It appears that the Democratic National Convention connected with voters and the most recent gaff in which Romney lashed out at the President over an anti Islam video has further has hurt him.

Romney lashed out at the President when the U.S. embassy in Cairo attempted to calm protesters over an anti Islam video. The U.S. embassy in Cairo had informed protesters early in the day (last week) that the United States did not condone such behaviors in the video. Later in the day US ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed. Mitt Romney came out and said the President should not apologize. Romney’s remarks further fueled the anger in the Middle East.

The Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum is a combination of the Weisbrod Museum and the International B-24 Memorial Museum, designed to honor the men and women who served during World War II with emphasis on the Pueblo Army Air Base and the B-24 Liberator bomber. The museum is managed and maintained by the Pueblo Historical Aircraft Society.
