An Algerian Military C-130 Transport Plane Crashed Killing 77

February 11, 2014 - An Algerian military transport plane crashed today about noontime killing 77 people onboard, it has been reported that there is one survivor. The four engine Lockheed built C-130 Hercules crashed into a mountain near Ain Kercha, 240 miles east of Rouïba, the capital Algiers.

Upon impact the C-130 exploded and broke up into three pieces under poor weather conditions. The Defense Ministry has indicated weather conditions may have played a role in the crash, "unfavorable weather conditions and storms accompanied by snow in the region were behind the crash" the ministry said.

The military transport plane had departed from Tamanrasset province, Algeria and was to land at Constantine in the north-eastern Algeria. The Algerian officials have not given an official death toll. But it has been reported that the C-130 was carrying 99 passengers and a flight crew of four. Algerian media initially put the death toll at 103.

The C-130 was carrying members of the Algerian armed forces and their relatives. The survivor of the crash suffered head injuries and was initially treated at a military facility before being flown to a military hospital in Algiers.

The aircraft was on approach for lading when it crashed 30 miles southeast of Constantine. Air Traffic Control reported they lost radio contact with the C-130 just before the crash.

President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has declared a three day mourning for the victims and called the soldiers who had died "martyrs for the country." Commander Farid Nechad, who is coordinating recovery efforts, has stated 55 bodies had been recovered. Due to the terrain and snow conditions recovery efforts have been very difficult.
