Cruise Line Passengers Killed In Sightseeing

June 26, 2015 - On Thursday,
Eight passengers on the Holland America cruise
line ship, the Westerdam, boarded a de Havilland
Canada
DHC-3T Vazar Turbine Otter aircraft at
Ketchikan International Airport,
Alaska
for aerial shore sightseeing flight. The
Westerdam was on a on a seven day cruise which
had departed
Seattle
on Saturday.
The 1958, Turbine Otter,
N270PA, which was operated by Promech Air
crashed into mountainous terrain near Ella Lake,
Misty Fjords National Monument, Alaska, about 25
miles northeast of Ketchikan airport. All eight
passengers were killed along with the pilot.
Promech Air had operated a fleet of five Turbine
Otters.
Turbine Otter had crashed sometime around 11:20
AM. Clint Johnson, head of the National
Transportation Safety Board's
Alaska
office, said "The initial rescue crew that went
in had a very tough time because of the
terrain... It's a very steep, mountainous area,
and weather conditions caused them to stand
down."

Alaska State Troopers have identified the
victims as: Hal Cheney, 71, and Mary Doucette,
59, both of Lodi, California; Glenda Cambiaso,
31, and Hugo Cambiaso, 65, both of North
Potomac, Maryland; June Kranenburg, 73, and
Leonard Kranenburg, 63, both of Medford, Oregon;
Margie Apodaca, 63, and Raymond Apodaca, 70,
both of Sparks, Nevada; and the pilot, Bryan
Krill, 64, of Hope, Idaho.
