A Harding Working And Well Loved Ohio Airport Manager Passed Away

By Alan Harding

May 18, 2011 - Marla Rae Elliott, age 57, of Toms Road, Bellville, Ohio passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at Knox Community Hospital. She was born on February 3, 1954 in Marion County, Ohio to the late Ray and Linda Lou (Ward) Knapp.

Marla worked as the airport manager for the Knox County Airport from 1994 until present. She was a strong advocate for smaller airport aviation and would often speak at the Ohio Aviation Conference.

Knox County Airport (FAA LID: 4I3) is a public use airport located four nautical miles (7 km) southwest of the central business district of Mount Vernon, a city in Knox County, Ohio, United States. It is owned by Knox County Airport Authority.

Marla was a member of the Ohio Airport Association and currently served as secretary. At home, Marla enjoyed working outside in her vegetable and flower gardens and collecting cookie jars.

She was a member of the Buckeye Oliver Collectors where she served as past secretary and the Oliver Hart-Parr National Club. Marla just recently hosted the 2011 spring picnic for the Buckeye Oliver Collectors.

She is survived by her husband, Larry Elliott, three sons, Drew Elliott of Fredericktown, Bobby Fisher and Brian Fisher, a daughter, Marcie Fisher, two brothers, Rick Knapp of Ashville, Ohio and Terry (Jill) Knapp of Mount Gilead. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Friends may call on Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050. The family will observe a private funeral service and burial.

?What a tragic loss. Marla was truly a special person. She was so committed to all that she did, to say nothing of her pride in her son. I spoke with Marla at the conference concerning her health issues as they were emerging, I was heartened by her positive attitude and the maturity and prospective with which she approached the future. I felt confident that things would be just fine?, said John Popio Board Member, Ohio Aviation Association (OAA).

Little do we know. Marla was always caring and concerned about the well-being of others. What a terrible loss, I will miss her personally, and Knox county and OAA can never replace the wonderful person who worked so tirelessly on our behalf. Marla was always the person to step up and offer to take care of others (To view this obituary or leave a private condolence).
