Allegiant Airlines To Pull Out Of Orlando International Airport

October 28, 2010 - Allegiant Airlines announced on Wednesday it will consolidate all of its Orlando air service to Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) beginning Feb.1, 2011.

Allegiant Airlines, which currently operates 29 routes to and from the Orlando area, will move the 10 routes it serves from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Orlando-Sanford International Airport due to the high operating costs.

"Our customers prefer the convenience and simplicity of Sanford, and we're pleased to respond to their overwhelming requests to return all of our Orlando service to the airport," Andrew C. Levy, Allegiant Travel Company President, says.

"Additionally, the substantially lower airport operating costs coupled with the more efficient operating environment at Orlando Sanford made this the right decision for Allegiant."

"I am pleased Allegiant is planning to expand its operations at Orlando Sanford International Airport," says U.S. Rep. John Mica. "This airport provides great access and convenience to Central Florida for visitors and residents, bringing low-cost, high quality, nonstop service to underserved markets. As a major carrier at Orlando Sanford, Allegiant's impact on this region is significant and I congratulate them."

Allegiant began service to the Orlando area via the Orlando Sanford International Airport May 26, 2005, with nonstop flights to four markets. Today, the company serves 29 markets to the Orlando area including: Appleton, Wis., Bangor, Maine, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Chattanooga, Tenn., Duluth, Minn., Elmira, N.Y., Fargo, N.D., Fort Wayne, Ind., Greensboro, N.C., McAllen, Texas, Northwest Arkansas, Owensboro, Ky., Plattsburgh, N.Y., Roanoke, Va., Rockford, Ill., Sioux Falls, S.D., South Bend, Ind., Toledo, Ohio, and Wilmington, N.C.

By consolidating the operations to a single airport in the Orlando area, Allegiant is able to keep costs down and offer its customers the best travel deals. Allegiant currently bases five MD-80 series jet aircraft at Orlando International Airport and as of Feb. 1, 2011, the aircraft will move to Orlando Sanford International Airport to support the additional flights. Allegiant began service from Orlando International Airport Feb. 1, 2010.

Allegiant was founded in 1997 under the name WestJet Express. After a trademark dispute with West Jet Air Center of Rapid City, South Dakota, and with the name's similarity to WestJet Airlines of Calgary, Alberta, the airline adopted the name Allegiant Air and received its operating certificate for scheduled and charter domestic operations in 1998. The airline also has authority for charter service to Canada and Mexico. Wholly owned by Allegiant Travel, the airline now has over 1,300 employees.

Allegiant will move service from Orlando International Airport to Orlando Sanford International Airport as follows: Allentown, Pa. Feb. 1, 2011, Des Moines, Iowa Feb. 2, 2011, Grand Rapids, Mich. Feb. 3, 2011, Greenville Spartanburg, S.C. - Feb. 1, 2011, Huntington, W.V. Feb. 4, 2011, Knoxville, Tenn. Feb. 1, 2011, Lexington, Ky. - Feb. 4, 2011, Springfield, Mo.
