Bombardier Global Aircraft To Incorporate Nexcelle Nacelle System

October 25, 2010 - Nexcelle will provide the nacelle and thrust reverser for GE’s TechX integrated powerplant that has been selected to power the new Bombardier Global 7000 and 8000 business jet aircraft, marking the second major program win for this international joint venture company.

The nacelle system will benefit from Nexcelle’s pioneering approach to integrated propulsion systems, and will incorporate innovative technologies from its two parent companies: the Safran Group’s Aircelle, and GE’s Middle River Aircraft Systems (MRAS).

Nexcelle’s win for this new GE engine program follows the company’s 2009 selection to provide the nacelle and thrust reverser for CFM International’s LEAP-X1C engine, which is to power the COMAC C919 jetliner.

“This decision further underscores the value of Nexcelle’s approach to integrated propulsion systems, and also underscores the advantages of our technology roadmap for a full range of jet engine applications,” said Nexcelle President Steve Walters. “With our wins in both the business aviation sector and the single-aisle 150-seat jetliner category, Nexcelle is ready to pursue other nacelle business opportunities.”

Features of the nacelle for the new GE TechX engine include a one-piece extended aluminum inlet lip-outer barrel for reduced aerodynamic drag, an innovative anti-ice system that uses a directed flow nozzle concept. A 360-degree, single-piece extended composite inner barrel incorporating advanced acoustic protection for lower engine noise levels.

A simplified composite fan cowl that allows for improved maintenance and reduces system weight; and a target style thrust reverser with fixed nozzle to provide lower weight and reverse thrust efficiency. Studies to incorporate additional technologies will continue through the joint development phase of the aircraft program.

Established in 2008, Nexcelle brings together the expertise of its MRAS and Aircelle parent companies in engine nacelle design, systems integration, certification, manufacturing and after-market product support. By working side-by-side with its related engine manufacturers GE for TechX, and the CFM International joint venture of GE and Safran for LEAP-X Nexcelle contributes to an integrated propulsion system approach that provides better aerodynamic performance and lower weight, higher in-service reliability and better maintainability.

Nexcelle is creating smart nacelle systems for tomorrow’s world travel. Headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, the company is a joint venture of Aircelle and Middle River Aircraft Systems (MRAS), which are leading suppliers of engine nacelles, thrust reversers and aerostructures. Through Nexcelle’s relationship with CFM International and GE Aviation, the company brings unparalleled expertise in the design, development, production and support of integrated propulsion systems for a wide range of aircraft.
