Senate Candidate Meets With Transport Workers Union Members

By TWU

October 13, 2010 - Rep. Kendrick Meek’s campaign for U.S. Senate from Florida made headlines when he stopped by the Tampa, Orlando and Miami airports to meet TWU members and other airline workers. The event was coordinated by a team of TWU members who are working hard to get the Democrat and pro-labor candidate elected.

Jeffrey Mitchell (Local 291) and Andrew Rangolan (Local 570) coordinated the events along with Mike Cernosek (Local 555) and Stephanie Roberts (Local 556) on Sept. 26 in Tampa, September 27 in Orlando and October 5 in Miami.

Airport workers were able to discuss important issues with Meek and display the enthusiastic support of working people for the candidate. American Airlines and American Eagle workers gave Meek a tour of the facilities and showed him some of the important work they do from checking-in passengers to repairing planes.

“A lot of our members were excited. They had their Meek for Senate signs and stickers on showing their support,” said Rangolan. “Meek and his staff saw that TWU was there for him.” The events received extensive press coverage and demonstrated Meek’s popularity with working people, which was a boost for the campaign that is in a tight three-way race with Republican Marc Rubio and Republican-turned-independent Gov. Charlie Crist. According to Rangolan, every TV news station in South Florida covered the event and many newspapers published stories with great photos of Meek talking with members.

These visits are among a series of events the candidate has held with and supported by the TWU, including a rally with Vice President Joe Biden on Sept. 24. “Meek enjoys the events because we are able to get a good turnout for him and show that TWU is fully behind him,” said Mitchell.

Mitchell has been a key figure mobilizing the power of unions as the statewide labor-coordinator for the Meek campaign. All unions in Florida, which represent 500,000 people through nearly 500 organizations, must go through Mitchell to schedule events with Meek. Rangolan has also been released from his TWU position to work statewide on the campaign.

TWU locals in Florida have been excited to play an important role in the Meek campaign because he is a strong advocate for the issues facing working families. “In the most recent debate, Meek continued to emphasize that he is 100% for labor and middle-class working people,” said Mitchell. “He is against shipping jobs overseas and wants to keep jobs here in Florida. He was interested when we talked to him about how American airlines is the only carrier doing maintenance in the U.S.
