Bob Irwin Co-Founder Of Aircraft Spruce Dies At 95
 
 

June 30, 2015 - After selling Fullerton Air Parts, Bob and Flo Irwin formed a new company called Aircraft Spruce Company (Aircraft Spruce) in 1965. The company initially started off selling one product, and that product was aircraft grade lumber that was made from the spruce tree. The lumber was used for aircraft construction and restoration.

As the company grew, Bob and Flo began to take on new products to sell to their customers. As Bob began to take on new products he began to assemble a catalog. At which time the company changed its name to Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Co. The company catalog has grown to over 900 pages and over 80,000 products and employs over 150 employees.

In Bob's earlier years he served in the military as a ground flight instructor using the Link flight simulator, he was referred to as Link trainer instructor. In 1949, Bob became a pilot.

 

After the war, Bob attended college, he completed his studies and received a doctorate degree in chemical engineering from the University of Missouri. Bob gained employment with Aerojet General where he worked on engine propulsion research.

On June 26, 2015, Bob Irwin, passed away in Lake Havasu City, Arizona at age 95. The aviation community will remember Bob as one of the pioneers of the aviation supply industry and a person who had a passion for flying. Bob and Flo's son Jim Irwin and his wife Nanci now run the company along with their children and other family members.
