Embraer’s Legacy 650 Jet Meets Long Range Flight Expectations

By Daniel Baxter

November 10, 2010 – Embraer’s new large Legacy 650 executive jet demonstrator completed a nonstop flight from Dubai (UAE) to London’s Farnborough Airport, in the U.K. The aircraft covered an equivalent still air distance of 3,500 nautical miles (6,482 kilometers) in 8 hours. The flight was performed with ten occupants, seven passengers and three crew members aboard a typically equipped Legacy 650.

“The achievement of this nonstop flight in the Legacy 650 from Dubai to London with seven passengers is testimony of the capability the Legacy 650 offers to Middle East clients,” said Colin Steven, Embraer Vice President, Marketing and Sales, Europe, Africa and the Middle East executive Jets.

“With the comfort of three distinct cabin zones and the largest baggage volume in its class, the Legacy 650 provides a significant nonstop link capability between the Middle East and Europe, which can be performed year-round, independently of en route headwinds.”

Launched one year ago at NBAA 2009, the large Legacy 650 can fly up to 3,900 nautical miles (7,223 kilometers), nonstop, with four passengers, or 3,840 nautical miles (7,112 kilometers) with eight passengers, or approximately 500 nautical miles (926 kilometers) farther than the Legacy 600.

This significant increase in range was accomplished through extensive airframe modifications, such as reinforced wings and landing gear, larger fuel capacity, and new highly efficient and more powerful Rolls-Royce AE 3007A2 engines. Honeywell’s new Primus Elite avionics suite also equips the Legacy 650 and future Legacy 600s.

The new jet has the same elegant, comfortable and functional interior as the Legacy 600, with three distinct cabin zones and a spacious galley, as well as the largest inflight accessible baggage compartment of its category. Cabin noise levels were reduced with a state-of-the-art sound insulation package, and the high-speed Internet datalink has been upgraded to Inmarsat’s SwiftBroadband system.

The Legacy 650 was recently certified by Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Authority (Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil – ANAC) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The first deliveries are scheduled for this year.

The large-cabin Legacy 650 carries 13 passengers (standard configuration). The quiet and refined cabin features a high-end interior, with leather seats, divan, credenza, and tables for meals or meetings. There is also a spacious galley for preparing hot and cold meals, an ample aft lavatory, wardrobes, cabinets, and an entertainment system with DVD and satellite communication.

Optional High-Speed Data (HSD) SwiftBroadband equipment and Wi-Fi technology enable customers to browse the Internet, access e-mails, and transfer files during flight, providing better use of time, increased work productivity and more entertainment possibilities. The aircraft has a large baggage compartment that is easily accessed during flight, and has a total capacity of 240 cubic feet (6,800 liters).

Powered by two highly efficient Rolls-Royce AE 3007A2 engines, the jet has a maximum cruising speed of Mach 0.80. Its range of 3,900 nautical miles (7,223 kilometers) with four passengers, or 3,840 nautical miles (7,112 kilometers) with eight passengers, both with NBAA IFR fuel reserves, means that the aircraft can fly nonstop from London (UK) to New York (USA); Dubai (United Arab Emirates) to London or Singapore; Miami (USA) to São Paulo (Brazil); Singapore to Sydney (Australia); or Mumbai (India) to Central Europe.

The Legacy 650 also features Honeywell Primus Elite™ avionics. The flight deck incorporates an upgraded graphical user interface, enabling smarter and faster decisions while reducing pilot workload. Highly reliable liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors add graphics capabilities not possible with cathode ray tubes (CRT).

Coupled Vertical Navigation (VNAV); Required Navigation Performance (RNP) 0.3; Future Air Navigation System (FANS) 1/A Controller to Pilot Data Link Communication (CPDLC); charts and maps; satellite weather; Wide Area Augmentation System – Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance Approaches (WAAS/LPV); and SmartRunway and SmartLanding Runway Awareness and Advisory System (RAAS) are some of the new features available.

Primus Elite also permits the inclusion of Honeywell’s award-winning SmartView Synthetic Vision System (SVS). The list price of the Legacy 650, under 2010 economic conditions, is US$ 29.5 million.
